Geneva, 29 June 2020 – The 2020 FIA Formula One World Championship™ will commence this week in Austria with the FORMULA 1 ROLEX GROSSER PREIS VON ÖSTERREICH 2020. From Friday 3 to Sunday 5 July, the Formula 1® field will compete at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria, in the season-opening Grand Prix, the first of two events at the track. Reflecting on the return of Formula 1® action, Rolex Testimonee and nine-time Formula 1® race winner Mark Webber says: “There is relief as well as excitement that racing is back, and in a beautiful location such as Austria. I think all the drivers and teams are raring to go, so it’s sensational news – here’s to some good racing.”
Earlier this month, following the postponement of the season as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, Formula 1® announced the opening eight races of the revised schedule. After the double-header in Austria, the teams will race in Hungary and twice in the United Kingdom, before competing in Spain, Belgium and Italy, with all of these events expected to take place behind closed doors. A finalized calendar is due to be announced in the coming weeks and is likely to comprise 15 to 18 races.
Recognizing the role played by the sport in the global response to coronavirus, Rolex Testimonee and three-time FIA Formula 1 Drivers’ World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart says: “Motor sport has always been famous for rapid problem-solving. Formula 1® marks its 70th anniversary in 2020 and will honour the occasion during the second race at Silverstone Circuit (UK) over the weekend of 7–9 August. The track famously hosted the first Formula 1® Grand Prix in 1950 and the event provides an opportunity for the sport to reflect on its rich history, the legends who have paved the way for future generations and its ongoing technological advancements.
